The most common under bed storage mistake happens before any wood is cut. A box can fit the empty space yet still scrape the frame, catch the rug, or refuse to open once a lid and handle are added. A dependable build begins with the real route the drawer must travel, including the lowest bed rail, floor surface, and space beside the bed.
Measure the Clearance and Pullout Path
Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction under the bed at several points. Subtract the height of your casters or glides, the base thickness, and a practical gap for floor variation. Also measure between legs and supports, because the widest open span is not always where the finished drawer will travel.
Mark the proposed footprint on the floor with removable tape and pull a cardboard template through the full path. Check bedside tables, rugs, heating vents, and wall clearance. Leave enough room to remove the drawer completely, since cleaning and repairs become frustrating when it can only open halfway.

Choose Wheels for the Actual Floor
Small fixed casters work well on smooth hard floors when they align with the pull direction. On carpet, larger wheels or low friction furniture glides may move more reliably, but both consume valuable height. Test one loaded sample on the rug edge before committing to hardware for every drawer.
Use four support points near the corners and keep heavy contents low and evenly distributed. Swivel casters can wander sideways in a narrow opening, while rigid wheels track predictably. Add felt or a suitable soft tread where the flooring manufacturer requires protection.

Cut a Light but Stiff Plywood Box
Plywood storage drawers need a base that stays flat and sides tall enough to contain clothing without wasting clearance. A thin base can work when reinforced beneath, while thicker side pieces give screws and handles more material to grip. Ask the supplier to break down large sheets if your saw setup cannot support them safely.
Cut paired sides together so their dimensions match, then label every part before assembly. Ease sharp edges with sandpaper and seal both faces to reduce uneven moisture movement. Keep the box shallow enough that you can see and reach its back without unloading the front.

Assemble the Box Square
Dry fit the base and sides on a flat surface before adding glue or fasteners. Compare the two diagonal measurements and adjust the corners until they match. A square box rolls straighter, accepts a lid more easily, and keeps the drawer front aligned with the bed.
Predrill near plywood edges to reduce splitting, then use glue and suitable screws or brads for the chosen thickness. Add corner blocks only where they will not steal needed storage width. Let the assembly cure on a flat floor while clamps hold the shape.

Install Casters and a Low Profile Pull
Place caster plates near reinforced corners and use fasteners that cannot pierce into stored items. Check that every wheel touches the floor before loading the box. A recessed pull, fabric loop, or shallow cutout preserves knee clearance better than a projecting cabinet handle.
Roll the empty drawer under the bed, then add weight gradually and repeat the test. Listen for rubbing and watch whether the front rises at a rug edge. Correct a hardware or clearance problem now rather than forcing a loaded drawer through a tight opening.

Add Dust Protection That Still Opens
A removable fabric cover or divided lightweight lid keeps dust and hair away from bedding without demanding much vertical space. Test the lid while the drawer is partly under the bed, because a single rigid panel may hit the frame before it opens. A split or folding design is often easier to use in a low opening.
Seal exposed wood with a fully cured low odor finish, then load the drawer by category rather than packing every remaining object into it. Use breathable bags for clean textiles when the room is humid and vacuum the cavity during normal floor cleaning. The finished organizer should roll smoothly, close without a visible gap, and come out completely when the space needs attention.
